Sidewalk Art Show

The 64th Annual Sidewalk Art Show for Roanoke, VA Artists took place on Saturday, June 4. It featured 112 artists who had been selected from hundreds of entries. The show’s diverse mix of mediums included photography, painting, fine craft, sculpture, mixed media, original printmaking, and drawing. The show was sponsored by the Taubman Museum of Art, the Blue Ridge Beverage Company, Grand Home Furnishings, and Lindor Arts. Artists from around the world exhibited their artwork at the show. Corwyn Garman, the Sidewalk Art Show’s organizer, spent most of Saturday meeting with the artists, learning about their work, and answering questions about their work.

Black Dog Salvage architectural design business

For 18 years, Black Dog Salvage has been repurposing and upcycling materials for its Roanoke, Virginia, clients. In 2003, it purchased a historic home built by Roanoke stone mason Michael Grosso using salvaged materials from the downtown post office. The company’s team of designers is now working on the renovation of this home. Ultimately, it will cost about $300,000 to restore the home to its former glory.

Judith Leiber’s sequined handbags

Judith Leiber’s sequinned handbags were first made of metal and covered with Swarovski crystals. This style became popular after a number of women began wearing them, including Mamie Eisenhower, who wore a sequined handbag at her inauguration ball in 1953. The sequins added a festive touch to her look.

Mary Peterson Vargas

Born and raised in Roanoke, VA, Mary Peterson Vargas was inspired by nature and loved oil painting. Her dream was to become an oil painter, but life got in the way. Her father encouraged her to take up oil painting again. Her mother, Myrna Peterson, had shown her how to do it, but never taught her. Since then, Mary has been creating her paintings and is a proud member of the League of Roanoke Artists.

Mary Houston

If you’re looking for artwork that is both beautiful and unique, Mary Houston, Roanoke VA artist, maybe the person to visit. This local artist was born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. She studied art at Roanoke College and earned a Bachelor of Arts in painting. As a freshman, Houston won a teacher’s award in art. Now, she exhibits her work in public galleries and other venues around town.

Taubman Museum of Art

Previously the Art Museum of Western Virginia, the Taubman is now a museum with a focus on the arts. The Taubman was designed by architect Randall Stout. It features an impressive collection of European and American art. The Taubman’s collections include works by Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, and more. The museum is a must-visit for visitors to Roanoke.

Mill Mountain Star

The Mill Mountain Star, also known as the Roanoke Star, is the largest freestanding illuminated manmade structure in the world. It was constructed in 1949 and sits on top of Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia. From the air, the star can be seen for 60 miles. Located on Mill Mountain, it is 1,045 feet above the city. The star has inspired artists and explorers ever since.
